Yes, I have changed my topic to the "Barbershop Chorus Community".I have now observed another barbershop chorus rehearsal and have learned more about what ties these men (and two teenagers) of diverse backgrounds together. In addition to a love of music, most of these men are connected in some way to one another because of their past. In general, the older men like to socialize and tell one another stories about how they served in wars or their past military experience. I was rather amazed to see how many of these men were veterans and talked with extreme ease about their experiences (even if the experiences themselves were emotionally disturbing). Also, many of these men who attended armed forces' academies (such as the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, etc.) were active participants in barbershop quartets :). So far I have interviewed two of the members of the chorus and each one told me what he loves so much about the chorus (primarily the camaraderie). The other thing that the younger told me was that he just loves to sing.

I find it really interesting that there are two teenage members in the group. How do they fit in? What do you notice about what kind of stories they tell? Or do they just listen to the older members?
ReplyDeleteBased on my observations and overhearing what their topic(s) of conversation were, they tend to fit in because of their shared passion for sharing music with others and their love of cammaderie. Most of the stories they tell are about their love for music and funny experiences that occur during their daily practice of the music. Other times they just listen to the older members and ask questions.
